What is Paint Calculator?

Calculate paint quantity and cost for interior & exterior walls with Indian brand pricing - Asian Paints, Berger, Nerolac. Includes primer and putty estimation.

Painting Guide & Tips

Painting your home requires careful planning to ensure the right quantity of materials and perfect finish. Our calculator accounts for surface absorption, number of coats, and standard coverage rates of popular Indian brands.

1. Choose the Right Paint

Emulsion for interiors (smooth/washable), Enamel for wood/metal, and Exterior Eumlsion for weather protection. Premium paints (Royale/Velvet) offer better stain resistance.

2. Don't Skip Prep

For new walls, apply 2 coats of Putty + 1 coat of Primer before painting. This ensures smoothness and reduces paint consumption by up to 20%.

Features Included

  • Room-wise Estimation: Calculate for multiple rooms (walls + ceiling) separately.
  • Custom Openings: Deduct door/window areas automatically or manually.
  • Brand Pricing: Live rates for Asian Paints, Berger, Nerolac, and Dulux.

How to Estimate Paint Quantity

Calculate the exact amount of paint, primer, and putty needed for your painting project in 5 steps.

1

Measure Wall Area

Measure the height and width of all walls. Multiply them to get the total square footage. Don't forget the ceiling!
2

Deduct Openings

Measure doors and windows and subtract their area from the total wall area to get the 'Paintable Area'.
3

Select Paint Type

Choose between Distemper (economy), Emulsion (standard), or Royale (premium). Coverage varies by type (e.g., Emulsion covers ~140 sqft/L).
4

Determine Coats

For new walls, use 2 coats of Putty + 1 Coat Primer + 2 Coats Paint. For repainting, 1 Coat Primer + 2 Coats Paint is standard.
5

Calculate Quantity

Divide the Paintable Area by the coverage rate. Example: 1000 sqft / 140 = ~7.2 Litres. Always buy 10-15% extra.

Common Questions

1
How much paint do I need for a 10x12 room?

For a 10×12 ft room with 10ft ceiling and 1 door + 2 windows, wall area is approximately 340 sqft. You'll need about 2.5-3 litres for 2 coats of premium emulsion paint (130 sqft/L coverage).

2
How many coats of paint should I apply?

For best results, apply 2 coats of paint over properly prepared surface (putty + primer). For drastic color changes (dark to light), 3 coats may be needed. Premium paints often achieve good coverage in 2 coats.

3
What is the difference between emulsion and enamel paint?

Emulsion paint is water-based, quick-drying, and used for walls/ceilings. Enamel paint is oil-based with glossy finish, used for metal, wood, and high-moisture areas like bathrooms. Emulsion is easier to apply and clean.

4
How long should I wait between paint coats?

For most emulsion paints, wait 4-6 hours between coats. Check manufacturer specifications. Temperature and humidity affect drying time - wait longer in humid conditions.

5
Is wall putty necessary before painting?

Wall putty is essential for new walls or walls with imperfections. It provides a smooth surface, fills minor cracks, and improves paint adhesion and finish. Skip only for well-maintained walls being repainted.
