COMMON QUESTIONS.

When are handrails mandatory?

Both ADA and NBC require handrails when the ramp rise exceeds 6 inches (150mm). Handrails must be provided on both sides for ramps wider than 48 inches.

Can I use a steeper slope?

Only for existing buildings where 1:12 is not feasible. Maximum 1:8 for alterations, but must have landings every 3 feet of rise. Always consult local authorities.

What landing size is required?

Minimum 60 inches (1524mm) clear length and at least the ramp width. Required at top, bottom, and every 30 inches of rise.

What material is best for outdoor ramps?

Concrete is most durable and slip-resistant. Steel with non-slip coating works for industrial settings. Consider climate and drainage in material selection.
