NBC 2016 Staircase Requirements

The National Building Code (NBC) 2016 Part 4 Section 4.9 (Staircase) specifies strict dimensions for staircases based on building occupancy:

How to Design a Code-Compliant Staircase

Calculate Rise, Run, and Headroom according to NBC 2016 standards.

1

Determine Total Rise

Measure the floor-to-floor height. If strictly floor-to-ceiling is known, add slab thickness.
2

Calculate Number of Risers

Divide Total Rise by desired Riser height (max 150mm for institutional, 190mm for residential). Round up to nearest whole number.
3

Calculate Actual Riser Height

Divide Total Rise by the Number of Risers to get the exact Riser dimension.
4

Determine Tread Depth

Select a Tread depth (min 250mm residential, 300mm others). Ensure 2R + T = 600-640mm.
5

Check Headroom

Verify minimal vertical clearance of 2.1m from the pitch line.

Technical FAQ & Regulatory Compliance

1
What is the 2R + T rule?

The 'Rule of Thumb' for staircase comfort states that twice the Riser (R) plus one Tread (T) should be between 600mm and 640mm. This ensures a natural walking stride while ascending.

2
What is the minimum headroom for a staircase?

As per NBC 2016 Part 3 Section 12.18, the minimum clear headroom measured vertically from the pitch line of the stairs must be at least 2100 mm (2.1 meters).
