What is Occupant Load & Fire Safety (NBC 2016)?

Occupant Load is the maximum number of persons that may occupy a building or portion thereof at any one time. In India, this calculation is governed by NBC 2016 Part 4. It is critical for determining the number of exits, stair widths, and door widths required for safe egress.

How to Calculate Occupant Load

The fundamental formula for occupant load calculation is:

Occupant Load = Floor Area (sqm) ÷ Load Factor (sqm/person)

Load factors vary significantly by occupancy type. For instance, an office requires 10 sqm/person, while an assembly hall with fixed seating requires only 0.65 sqm/person.

Exit Requirements per NBC Part 4

Number of Exits

  • Up to 50: 1 exit
  • 51 - 500: 2 exits
  • 501 - 1000: 3 exits
  • Above 1000: 4+ exits

Travel Distance

  • Without Sprinklers: 30 m max
  • With Sprinklers: 45 m max
  • Industrial (Standard): 45-60 m
